Dec 27, 2020 · Part of what makes this all work is I2S (Inter-IC Sound), a format for communicating PCM audio data between devices. Besides the ESP32, at the heart of it all is an SD card reader breakout board... The I2S Audio Breakout board uses the MAX98357A digital to analog converter (DAC), which converts I2S (not be confused with I2C) audio to an analog signal to drive speakers. The MAX98357A has a built in class D amplifier which can deliver up to 3.2W of power into a 4Ω load. For more information, see the Hardware Overview section below.
Feb 14, 2014 · The I2S coming out of the Wandboard is not LVDS, it is standard CMOS level. An adapter would have to be built to take the I2S signals and run them through LVDS transmitters. Whether it is better than another transport mechanism depends entirely on the DAC implementation. A really good asynchronous USB will beat the LVDS I2S. For a Raspberry Pi3 and etc, if an I2S DAC was chosen under general play back options, you would find the pull down menu actually includes "Generic I2S DAC" selection among many HAT I2S DAC. Now that I am using a Tinker board, I found this "Generic I2S DAC" feature is not included in the I2S DAC selection anymore.
