Originally bred for hunting as the Virginia Coonhound, breeders encountered lost scent issues when game would climb trees. Coonhound was originally bred in the United States. Their ancestry can be traced back to the Virginia foxhound and the American foxhound. This breed is well-known as a raccoon hunter, but it is also adept in opossum, mountain lion, deer, and bear hunting. Coonhound is very loyal, passionate, and intelligent.
The Bluetick was originally recognized by the UKC as the English fox & Coonhound, which included the Bluetick coonhound, Treeing Walker coonhound and English Coonhounds as all in the same breed. The breeds were later separated into their own breed. In 2008 the Bluetick Coonhound was recognized by the AKC in the Miscellaneous Class. This breed is not currently recognised by the FCI.
