My ‘second gear’ load is an adaptation of one of John Linebaugh’s personal loads ; 13.0 grains of Hodgdons HS6 powder with MO Bullet’s 250 grain SWC.

  • One thing I noticed hasn't been mentioned. .45 Colt usually uses heavier bullets. While 230 grain is pretty standard for ACP, 255 grain is standard for .45 Colt, and you can go up to 300+ in it. Not many of the heavier ones will work in ACP.

Jan 01, 2004 · My standard load for the .45 Ruger became any 300 or 325-grain bullet over 21.5-grains of H110 or WW296 for 1,200 fps. To again carry out the same themes mentioned with the .44 Magnum loads, I went with Oregon Trail's 300-grain flat point .45 bullet. This bullet has two crimping grooves to allow for different cylinder lengths. It is close to the .45 Colt ballistically, but not quite as powerful. Typical .45 Colt loads have about 10% more bullet mass (250 to 255 grains, versus 230 grains for the .45 ACP) and about 6% more velocity (around 900 fps, versus about 830 to 850 fps for the .45 ACP.) With proper bullets, the .45 Colt would have a slight edge over the .45 ACP.
